By definition, Myo - refers to muscle, and fascial - refers to the three-dimensional network of densely woven, tough connective tissue that surrounds every organ, muscle, nerve, bone and vessel in the entire body.
To picture what fascia look like in your body, think of a spider's web or sweater that connects the entire body through one single structure.
In a normal healthy state, the Fascial system maintains the body’s equilibrium through a balance of tension and elasticity. With the proper amount of tension, it helps support the efficient alignment of your bones while being elastic enough to permit full, unrestricted movement.
Fascia Restrictions form in the body due to trauma, repetitive stress injury, poor posture, scar tissue, inflammatory reactions and life stressors. Restrictions in one area of the body can affect the whole body. Fascia restrictions can create pain and stiffness making it difficult for you to move. The result stops you from doing those things you love to do.
As fascial restrictions grow it will start exerting abnormal pressure on bones, joints, nerves, blood vessels and even organs causing an unbalance the system. The unbalance creates pain both locally and in unrelated areas of your body. While your pain is all too real, the true cause is too often overlooked by conventional medical practitioners since fascial restrictions do not show up on ordinary diagnostic tests such as MRI's, CT scans and X-rays.
Through releasing restricted fascia, it allows the connective tissue fibers to reorganize themselves in a more flexible, functional fashion. By releasing old patterns with myofascial release therapy the goal is to re-educate the body so that you can utilize your energy much more efficient while improving your posture.
